Arezzo and its territory: a wonderful journey to undertake in order to discover the Della Robbia masterpieces, an itinerary to follow to reinterpret and fully understand the true meaning and importance of an exceptional form of art, examples of which can here be found in churches, small parish churches and ‘palazzi’. This journey takes you across the Casentino, Valdarno, Valdichiana and Valtiberina areas, following varied and fascinating itineraries where art and nature merge together in a truly captivating way.
An itinerary across this part of Tuscany that has always been loved and chosen by man, whose antique traces can be seen in many archaeological sites and museums, the most important being Arezzo’s own Archaeological Museum. This is the heart and land of Etruria that, starting from the Casentino area, extends to Cortona where amazing examples of one of the most enigmatic and intriguing populations have been discovered in extremely recent excavations.
These are places where nature and spirituality inspired poets such as Dante and Petrarca, painters such as Leonardo, Michelangelo and Vasari and which carefully protected the silence of San Francesco and San Romualdo in their spiritual retreats of La Verna and Camaldoli. Places which pilgrims passed through on their way to Rome, searching for something sacred which can indeed still be felt in the dignified Romanesque parish churches standing on the hillside of Pratomagno or in the figures painted by Piero della Francesca. Born and bred in this area, a special itinerary is devoted to the latter, leading you from his Mary Magdalene to the Legend of the True Cross in Arezzo, to the Monterchi Madonna del Parto and on to his actual birthplace, Sansepolcro, where the polyptych Madonna della Misericordia and the Resurrection are depicted in the universal language of art.
A fecund and bountiful countryside intra Tevere et Arno where solemn forests and benevolent plains meet together and convey, now as in the past, plenty of colours, perfumes and flavours. Ancient and traditional customs exploit what the land yields to produce rich and well-balanced cooking, perfect for being served with extra virgin olive oil, excellent wines, cheese and salamis and, most of all, with the delicious savoury taste of Chianina meat.
